06/30/1950 - 06/05/2026

Ralph Sheldon Tyler - builder, attorney, civic steward, son of one of Ohio's most consequential African American families, and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio, just shy of his seventy-sixth birthday.

Ralph was born on June 30, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Ralph Conrad Tyler and Mabel Saundra Tyler. He grew up in Cleveland, attending Miles Standish Elementary School and Moses Cleveland School before continuing his education at Howe Military School and graduating from Shaker Heights High School in 1968. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University in 1972 and his Juris Doctor from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1975 where he was president of his class.

Ralph's early career carried him beyond Cleveland and back again. He held positions with Citibank in New York City and with TRW in Cleveland, where his responsibilities ranged from managing state government relations to overseeing legal and regulatory affairs. Before joining the family business, he served as executive director of the Greater Cleveland Roundtable, coordinating the organization's work in education, labor-management relations, race relations, and minority economic development.

In time, Ralph took the helm of Ralph Tyler Companies as its CEO and President, carrying forward and expanding the engineering and architecture firm that his father had built. He grew the company beyond Ohio, opening an office in West Palm Beach, Florida. The company worked extensively with the North East Ohio Regional Sewer District and Cleveland Public Power. Under the family's stewardship, the company helped shape the very face of Cleveland, contributing to landmark projects including the Louis Stokes Wing of the Cleveland Public Library, the Federal Building and Courthouse, the expansion of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, and the Cleveland Browns Stadium. Ralph's work touched public buildings where his neighbors would gather, travel, learn, and cheer for generations to come.

His Cleveland roots were a great source of pride and he remained devoted to the city that shaped him. He built a life defined by hard work, integrity, and compassion. While his professional accomplishments were significant, those who knew him best know that his greatest gift was his spirit. He was funny, endlessly warm, and a true people person - someone who could strike up a conversation with anyone and leave them smiling. His optimism and humor have shaped the way his family moves through the world. He took pride in providing for his family and in the relationships he cultivated throughout his years in Northeast Ohio. Whether attending family gatherings, sharing stories over a meal, or cheering on Cleveland's or his children's sports teams, Ralph's genuine interest in others made everyone feel welcomed and valued.

Ralph leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity that will continue through the many lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Zoe Maxwell Tyler; his son, Ralph Tyler V; his daughters, Dr. Sarah Tyler Plummer, Mariel Tyler, and Katherine Tyler; his grandchildren, Cora Plummer and Jay Plummer; his sister, Kim Tyler Chapelle; nieces, Leah Wright and Chaney Wright; nephew, Kendall Tyler Pleasant, and an extended family that loved him dearly.

A memorial service celebrating Ralph's life will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 2:30 pm at The Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ralph's honor to the InMotion Wellness Program for Parkinson's or the Ralph C. Tyler Memorial Engineering Scholarship Fund at the Ohio State University.

Ralph Sheldon Tyler will be deeply missed, but the love and light he poured into his family and friends will always be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
